In this section, we will deal in more detail with the major doctrinal issues that separate Bible believing Christianity from Roman Catholicism. We will always approach each issue with the case stated for the Roman Catholic belief paralleled with the clear teachings of the Scriptures. Roman Catholic apologists will always take issue with the clear teaching of Scripture. We will certainly be accused of using an unreliable Protestant translation of the Bible (King James Version). We will no doubt also be accused of improperly interpreting the Scriptures. Finally, we will surely be called names, condemned as a heretic, assigned to Hell and be called a blasphemer among other things. However, we will merely quote the verses and generally let the verse interpret itself. The fact of the matter is that the majority of the Holy Scriptures need no interpretation. Rome attempts to twist the clear teaching of Scripture to suit her traditions. For centuries, Romanism has clouded the clear Bible teachings by hiding behind 'the traditions of the Fathers.' That fact of the matter is, we could have quoted all Scripture references from The New Catholic Bible; however, the standard excuse offered by Catholics would then simply be, "That is just your interpretation." For the most part, even the official Bible of the Catholic Church disagrees with the majority of the teachings and doctrines espoused by Rome. Roman Catholic apologists generally will refuse to discuss just the Scriptures apart from fleeing to tradition. At the very heart of the matter is Sola Scriptura (the Scriptures only). For you see, Rome will not accept the Scriptures by themselves. In actuality, Rome knows that the clear teaching of Scripture is at odds with their teachings. No wonder, 19 of the 25 sessions of The Council of Trent pronounce 'anathemas' (curses) upon all the tenets of Biblical Christianity. When this Council convened (1545-1565), the Protestant Reformation was sweeping Europe. Thousands upon thousands were reading the Holy Scriptures in their own languages and were quickly discovering that the clear teachings of Scripture were vastly different from those of Rome. For centuries Rome has sought to keep the Bible out of the hands of the people; they have condemned its reading by the common man; confiscated and burned God only knows how many copies of the Bible; and even today discourage the reading of the Scriptures. If Catholics read the Bible, they are forbidden to attempt to understand or interpret it for themselves under the penalty of Mortal sin. According to the teachings of Rome, only the clergy are allowed to interpret the Scriptures. However, we are commanded to "Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." (2 Timothy 2:15) The issues that we will address are: Confession, Images and Relics, Justification, Mary, Peter, Purgatory, Salvation, The Mass, Tradition, Future Events, The End, Priesthood, Sin, Infallibility, Indulgences, Baptism, Grace, Imputation |
